“Freddie Omm’s haiku collection is a diverse and interesting collection that I read through way too quickly. I will definitely be picking up other collections by this author. The writing flows well and is descriptive.”—Rey, NetGalley

“… a rare collection that feels both intimate and epic, taking the reader through layered stories of migration, myth, and identity, all within the simplicity and power of haiku chains. The poems guide you through Sicily’s beautiful and haunting landscapes while drawing subtle parallels between ancient myths and the very real struggles of modern migration… moving and thought-provoking, balancing the delicacy of haiku with powerful themes of displacement, resilience, and connection. The book is perfect for poetry lovers but also deeply rewarding for anyone drawn to stories that reveal humanity’s shared journey. There’s also a rich perspective that reimagines ancient characters in striking new ways, bringing strength and insight to classic figures. With proceeds going to migrant charities, this isn’t just a beautiful book; it’s one with a purpose. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience both the art of haiku and a fresh lens on age-old tales of belonging and survival.”— Amber, Amazon

“Freddie Omm’s Migrant Shadows is a captivating journey through the heart of Sicily, blending ancient myths with modern life in a beautifully poetic way. What makes this collection stand out is how it connects the timeless stories of Greek mythology with current issues, especially the experiences of migrants, with parallels between Odysseus, the classic wanderer, and today’s displaced individuals, highlighting the ongoing struggles for identity and belonging. The poems reflect a deep empathy for those facing hardships, making them poignant and, particularly in today’s setting, relevant.” S. Dent, Amazon

“This is a very interesting group of poems. The imagery and essence of the poetry is beautiful. I recommend giving this collection a read.” Stella M, NetGalley

“Omm’s writing is both tender and sharp, weaving together lyrical love poems with powerful insights into modern society. He explores themes of beauty and resilience while not shying away from the darker realities of life. The inclusion of notes on the myths adds extra depth for those interested in learning more, though the poems are impactful on their own.
The portrayal of women, particularly the figure of Penelope, is especially striking. Omm presents her as resourceful and wise, challenging traditional narratives that often depict her as merely a passive figure waiting for her husband’s return. This feminist lens enriches the overall experience, showcasing the strength of female characters in the face of adversity.
Overall, Sicilian Gods celebrates the vibrant essence of Sicily while addressing important social issues. It’s a book that invites readers to reflect on the connections between past and present, urging us to listen and learn from one another. With its beautiful language and profound themes, this collection is a must-read for anyone who appreciates poetry that speaks to the human experience.”—Sandie, Amazon

Fun, witty, deep and moving. The poems are concise and powerful. I especially love the sensual little poems in which Penelope swims sinuously through the book; there’s one with drugs dealers and hectic party scenes in Palermo; there’s a poem told by the Cyclops, about how he was fooled, robbed and blinded, his own story stolen from him; and “Sunsets”, a beautiful meditation on the way we yearn for perfection and how we idealise our lives and look for happy endings, while not quite trusting them either. There’s a wonderful love poem, “Alesa”, the evocative landscapes of Sicily flowing into the sea. And the theme of migrancy running all through it.. there’s such a wide range of poems and topics, it’s like taking a journey through Sicily in time, myth and space.
Despite its range, the book can be read quite quickly – and I found the journey really enjoyable. And then, when you read again, you notice new things you missed first time round. The notes are also fun, full of some fascinating facts. Rewarding, mind expanding book, highly recommended.”—the wiseone, Amazon
